HOW THE LAND LIES
How The Land Lies (2017)
Video
Duration 8mins
The collage film takes in scenes from sites across Newcastle Upon Tyne and Glasgow, where aggressive construction projects have been the subject of contention for local residents.
Less affluent communities seeing ever-increasing private developments rise up around their ears boasting luxury apartments and hotels or overpriced and oversupplied student accommodation blocks, overlooking the needs of current and long standing residents.
At a time when the national debate talks of an increase in child poverty and the dwindling amount of social housing, the reduced quality of private rented accommodation, the ongoing rise of homelessness and the degradation of community.
Disembodied, distorted and over-saturated figures throughout the film, reflect attitudes and mass generalisations of the media interlinked with the slow destruction of the remainder of one of the five Red Road Flats in Glasgow, which failed to fall during its demolition.
