 SELF PORTRAITS

Self Portraits (2017 - ongoing)

Photography, prop making, performance

Self Portraits came to life as a spin off from the Post Truth Artist project which dealt with fake media and sensationalist news in light of the 2016 political upheavals and also took inspiration from the then newly earned position of post-truth in the Oxford English Dictionary.

The project entailed a pursuit of fame as an internet artist using instructions from a ‘Post Truth Art Manifesto’  designed in conjunction with the work, the points of which were directly linked to the events happening in the political sphere at the time.

I produced several bodies of work as the ‘Post Truth Artist’. One lead me to explore the persona of the ‘artist’ working with psychoanalyst Carl G. Jung’s definition of persona where it is seen as a mask worn in public life to conceal our real self; an element of the personality which arises for reasons of adaptation or personal convenience.

During its development Self Portraits also became a response to the normalised performance of social media profile pictures, reflecting the new sense of identity that our relationship with the internet has bestowed upon us, that which is unfixed, multiple and increasingly slippery.
